Macy’s Inc. Same-Store Sales Down 7.1% In January
Macy’s Inc.’s January same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, fell 7.1%, worse than the previous guidance of decline of 4% to 6%. Total sales for the four weeks ended Feb. 2 fell to $1.28 billion from $1.78 billion a year ago, hurt in part by one fewer week in the January 2008 calendar. Macy’s now expects fourth-quarter earnings of $1.75 to $1.80, excluding merger integration costs of about $70 million. Macy’s also announced new initiatives to strengthen its local market and enhance selling, which in combination with the consolidation of three divisions, is expected to accelerate same-store sales growth and reduce expense. The division consolidations will result in a pretax charge of $150 million in the current fiscal year and job cuts totaling about 2,550 at the three divisional offices.
